Whenever you smile, laugh or frown, your face moves with the contraction of the delicate muscles in your face. Over the years, permanent creases and lines can form that now can be treated with a simple techniques using “Botox”.
Botox is a toxin produced by the bacteria “clostridium botulinum”, which can cause muscle weakness or paralysis. It temporarily softens facial lines and wrinkles by weakening the muscle it is injected into. After treatments, the overlying skin will look smoother and younger. Usually the effect is seen within one to three days, and can last from two to six months. Because it only lasts temporarily, patients may decide to have repeat injections two to four times a year.
Patients with wrinkles from facial expression (especially around the eyes and between the brows) are good candidates for Botox. It will not, however, help with sun-damaged sun damaged skin, nor with sagging or loose skin.
Patients who have neurological disorders, who are pregnant or nursing should not have Botox. Certain antibiotics and heart medications also may potentate the effects of Botox, and should not be given at the same time.
Detailed information about Botox injections can be obtained from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, as well as American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Allergan.
